North End Ski Club News Fall 2001

WORK DAY- SATURDAY, OCT. 20
HELP!!

Mark your calendars now! We have a lot to do and need lots of hands if we hope to have the North End ready for the ski season. The projects we must complete include splitting and stacking the firewood for the year, trail maintenance (picking rocks, trimming brush, seeding, spreading hay), yard work, cabin and outhouse projects, and enclosing the woodshed. Bring any tools you think would be appropriate, gloves, and an appetite. Brats and beverages will be provided. We plan to get started at 9 am.

VANDALISM PERSISTS
The North End continued to be the target of vandals this past year. Fortunately we have not had a repeat of the spray painting of the outhouse or burglary of our donation box, but we did suffer the loss of all the firewood we had stored in the woodshed at the end of the ski season. Apparently someone hauled off the wood on two separate occasions this spring. We will attempt to thwart future wood thieves by enclosing and locking the wood shed after the ski season. Use of the trails by motor vehicles also continues to be a problem, but one without an easy solution. Other forest users drive their trucks on some of the trails, especially during hunting season and cause considerable damage if the trails are wet. This year our snowshoe trails were discovered by motorcycles as well. The damage does not yet appear significant, but is of growing concern.

Preston and Dottie Memorial
Following the tragic passing of Preston and Dottie Morrel last February, memorial contributions were directed by the families to the North End Ski Club. There was an overwhelming response from friends, family, and North End Ski Club members and to date we have received over $2,000 in contributions. The NESC board of directors has been discussing a variety of ways in which to provide a suitable memorial tribute to our friends. We are researching a possible memorial plaque to be installed near the cabin as well as an additional structure that will include a memorial message near the junction of the North End Trail and the Birkie Trail. We hope to have something in place by ski season or soon after.

NORTH END SKI TRAILS MORE AND BETTER
The North End Trail system has undergone some major improvements this past summer. The popular B loop was widened and smoothed to allow better access for the groomer and the C loop, which was on hold last year due to logging operations, will be ready to ski before snow flies. The trails were bulldozed where necessary by Jack Moin and his dozer and then smoothed out by Dan Malesevich and his six wheeler. The trails are currently in need of lots of rock picking and some brush and root cutting. We hope to accomplish these projects on or before our workday, Saturday, October 20. This year we will have three ski loops suitable for classic and skate techniques with an outside loop of approximately 11 km and cutoffs at about 7 km and 4.5 km.

New signs have been ordered and we will be working hard to get them in place and to provide an improved map of the area to address the problem of keeping skiers and snowshoers orientated on the maze of trails that now occupy the forest around the North End. We are again working with Telemark Resort this year to provide grooming. We plan more frequent "as needed" grooming rather than the once a week schedule of last year.

WHAT CAN I DO?
Frustrated because you can't make the October work day? Missed the annual meeting? You want to contribute but it just hasn't worked out? Here are some suggestions to curb that guilt you're suffering. Take a hike - on the North End ski or snowshoe trails that is. While you're out there choose a section to pick some rocks, or bring your clippers and cut a few roots or some brush. Pick up a few sticks or that garbage some thoughtless person left behind. Visit the cabin and leave with the floor swept, or the stove emptied of ashes. The outhouse needs sweeping too. Is the wood rack inside filled? Are the paths to the buildings shoveled? During the ski season there is a weekly sign up sheet at the cabin to do chores around the buildings, the instructions are posted with the sign-up sheet. How about volunteering to help during our only fundraiser, the North End Classic? It takes a lot of work to keep the North End operating and looking good. We can use your help! Thanks.

NORTH END CLASSIC II
NOW A KORTELOPET QUALIFIER

The second annual North End Classic, which will be held this season on Sunday, February 10 at 10AM, has been designated a Kortelopet qualifier by the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation. The second Classic will have few changes over last year - the only significant change being the finish. After last year’s Classic and Kortelopet, which utilize the same course, it was decided that the zig zag decent of the Telemark ski hill was not the best way to finish. This year's races will see the contestants follow part of the former World Cup ski trail for about a kilometer near the end of the race. This will keep skiers in the woods for another kilometer or so before starting the decent about 2/3 of the way down from where last year's races ran. It also will eliminate the need for most of the switchback turns on the way down. Otherwise the course will remain the same with only some widening of a few bottlenecks.

The North End Classic will continue as a classic only race. It will again utilize the Birkie/Kortelopet start at the Cable Union Airport which was very popular last year and follow the Kortelopet trail back to Telemark. The Classic route differs from the Kortelopet only in the last 1/2 kilometer, as the use of the tubing and snowboarding hills at Telemark prevent the Classic from finishing directly in front of the old Coliseum site. Instead, the trail turns north and east at the bottom of the ski hill for a finish on the flat in front of the stable area. There will be two food stations along the course and age class awards will be presented to skiers in five-year age categories. The overall winners in the men's and women's categories will again be awarded a unique custom wood carving clock.

Race entry fees will be $25.00 up until January 10, $30 until race day and an additional $5.00 on race day with race proceeds benefiting the club. The North End Classic will again take place the day after the Pre-Birkie, allowing skiers to have a full weekend of ski racing. We are again fortunate to have the support of Toko, providing hats for all racers, giveaway prizes, course materials, and wax recommendations. Of course we will need plenty of help to assist with the many event logistics. If you are available and able to assist with the North End Classic, contact any North End Ski Club board member.

SNOWSHOE TRAILS UPDATE
The increasingly popular snowshoe trails will remain essentially the same as last year. The only change of note is that the three trail loops will be accessed closer to the warming cabin. Instead of traveling almost a quarter mile along the ski trail, a short connector only 50 yards from the warming cabin will be used. Some of the deadfalls have been removed and the trails were partially brushed this summer with more maintenance planned for the work day. Signs will be replaced and more added before the first snow. The trails will continue to connect to the Telemark system providing access to many miles of snowshoe travel.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SKI/SNOWSHOE
Looking for something to do besides watching TV on Wednesday nights? Does being out in the winter woods under a star filled sky with a warm fire waiting at the end of the trail sound inviting? For the past two years a small group of enthusiasts have been meeting at the North End Cabin on Wednesday evenings to ski or snowshoe, with some doing a little of each. People arrive at any time, hit the trails, and then at about 6-6:30 PM meet back at the cabin to sit by the fire, eat, and visit. Headlamps are handy (necessary) early in the year for skiing. Come and join us.
