Warming Cabin Complex Close to Completion At our fall work days our capable volunteer corps under the leadership of Irv Berlin began to knock off the last remaining details on the cabin and outhouse construction and finish work. The outhouse soffit and facia were completed, interior trim in the cabin finished and "squirrel proofed," and our hearty volunteers bested some of Wisconsin's nastiest glacial till to dig several holes to allow the construction of a wood shed near the cabin. The parking lot has also been slightly expanded and most of the remaining firewood has been cut, split and stacked. Installing the cedar shingles to the outhouse and a few remaining details are all that still require attention. If you get a chance to stop out and inspect our beautiful cabin, we're sure you will be impressed. This has been a most positive accomplishment, one of which we can all feel proud. All we need now is snow! It's Membership Time Again Get Ready for the North End Ski Trails As you may know, last year we opened a new 4.5 km loop starting across from the North End access trail to the Birkie Trail. Last season we worked in conjunction with Telemark Resort who helped with the grooming. This cooperative effort will continue this year on an expanded basis as we add one and hopefully two new loops in addition to the original loop. We should end up with what will essentially be one large loop of about Ilkm with cut-offs at about 7km and the original 4.5km. The whole trail will be on the average an intermediate level of difficulty, although there will be a couple of speedy descents. The trails are primarily located on a series of old logging roads in the area. A couple of these roads were recently used for logging and already opened up wide enough for skiing. The others have been brushed back by local volunteers. The trails will end up at about 12 to 14 feet wide and will be groomed for skating and have one classical track set on the side. We anticipate these trails 1 being ready for this ski season.
Snowshoe Trails Change Of the four trails we had last year, the A Trail will remain exactly the same. d The B Trail will have a short reroute to bring it more directly back to the A. The C Trail will be entirely rerouted and will now be an entirely cross country route and will not use any major logging roads. We experimented with a D loop C last year, but it did not receive much use and in as much as it was on what now will be ski trail including the Kortelopet route, it will be abandoned. All in all we expect the three North End Snowshoe Trails to offer some great snowshoeing. Fund Raisers Pay off The North End Classic - A Korteloppt review The North End Classic will start at 10:00 A.M. near the skating pond behind Telemark Lodge. The Classic will finish, as will the Kortelopet, on the plateau in front of the site of the former coliseum. There will be two food stations along the course and age class awards will be presented to skiers in five year age categories. Race entry fees will be $25.00 up until race day and an additional $5.00 on race day with race proceeds benefiting the club. The North End Classic will take place the day after the Pre-Birkie, so skiers traveling to the Hayward and Cable area can make a full weekend of it and ski in both races if they choose. Of course we will need plenty of help to assist with the many event logistics. If you are available and able to assist with the North End Classic, contact any North End Ski Club board member or call Ron Bergin at 715/798-3599 or rbergin@cheqnet.net.
